The live show “50 Jahre Rock”, aired on April 17th 2004 by Germany’s leading broadcaster ZDF, attracted an audience of over 5,67 million TV viewers and approximately 10.000 fans at the Preussag Arena in Hannover. Celebrating 50 years of rock, starting off with Bill Haley’s ‘Rock around the clock’ hit on April 12th 1954, the crème de la crème of rock and pop legends performed a solid 150 minute rock party, hosted by German TV personality and rocker Thomas Gottschalk. Guests included Bill Wyman, Peter Gabriel, the Scorpions, the Comets ( Bill Haleys original band ), Shakin’ Stevens, Gary Brooker ( Procul Harum ), and many more, topped off by international rock ambassador Michael Gorbatschow.

The event was equipped with a total of five YAMAHA PM1D live digital mixing consoles. Three PM1D’s were used for F.O.H. and two consoles were set up for monitoring. Gerd Braunewell from ZDF was responsible for the overall concept of the sound reinforcement system, the realisation were done by Steffen Schlupp (Executive Producer) and Omar Samhoun (FOH engineer), both working for Neumann & Müller, one of the largest Sound Reinforcement rental companies in Germany.

The first PM1D, operated by FOH engineer Robby Höhne, was used as the system’s master console. On the second PM1D, operated by FOH engineer Omar Samhoun, all signals from the all-star band “The Soulmates” were mixed. On console number three FOH engineer Andreas Kremer mixed all other live actors. The master busses of consoles two and three were fed into console one and routed into d&b Audiotechnik’s Q-series FOH sound system. Furthermore, all moderation- and playback signals were mixed on PM1D number one and sent into the sound system. In the Monitoring area one PM1D, operated by Monitor engineer Ekki von Nordenskjöld, was used for monitoring all live bands. Finally, the on-air monitor console was directed by monitor engineer Peter Riegel.

Solely the band “BAP” used a YAMAHA DM2000 for their monitoring. Both the Monitoring and the FOH PM1D systems have used the internal effects only – no external effect equipment was needed.
