3 Orchestras & Stars

(Source: YAMAHA Commercial Audio News Online, 07/2006)

The 6th of June 2006 saw an exceptional concert take place in the Olympic stadium in Munich. Featuring works from Wagner to Bernstein performed by Placido Domingo, soprano Diana Damrau, pianist Lang Lang, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and choir, the Bavarian Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra and choir and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra all together on stage, with an interlude from the German band “die Söhne Mannheims” featuring Xavier Naidoo, the event can only be described as truly spectacular.

The sound reinforcement concept realised by the team from Neumann & Müller made full use of the possibilities offered by digital audio technology.

3 Yamaha PM1D systems were chosen for front of house, feeding an L,C,R main PA configuration of d&b J-series arrays, a Yamaha DME system consisting of 2 DME64N units for the d&b Q-series mid field/near field systems, and a Yamaha DME system consisting of a DME64N and a DME24 for the d&b Q-series delay lines. The Yamaha/Riedel Artist-1D optical fibre system provided a secure connection with a minimum of cabling for the 150 metre run from the PM1D system’s DSP engine on the stage to the console at front of house.

All signal transfers between the PM1D systems themselves, from the PM1Ds to the mid field/near field and delay line DME systems and to the PM5D monitor console, were realised via MY8-AE and MY16-AE Yamaha digital I/O cards, in AES/EBU digital format. MY-16C interface cards were installed in the delay line DME system, enabling a CobraNet optical fibre connection for the 250 metre run from front of house to the delay amp positions in the stadium roof.

The outstanding result was a credit to Neumann & Müller, and a testament to the quality and flexibility of Yamaha digital systems and d&b loudspeaker systems.
