The 9th Kongress BW, a leading platform for information, innovation and transformation in the field of resource efficiency and the circular economy, took place in the form of a Digital Live Event at the Internationales Congresscenter Stuttgart (ICS) at the beginning of October 2020. The event was attended by executives and decision-makers from industry and municipal and private waste disposal organisations as well as from banks, consulting companies and public authorities. The first two days of the virtual congress agenda covered current trends and specific examples from everyday practice, giving participants the opportunity to learn and discuss. Following the keynote speeches – one given by Winfried Kretschmann, the prime minister of Baden-Württemberg – 15 forums were held in parallel and broadcast by livestream. In these sessions, congress partners from business, science and research disseminated practice-oriented know-how and presented innovative solutions for resource efficiency.

For the presentations held live at the ICS we designed the corresponding technical set-up and were responsible for integration into the livestream. Our assignment focused mainly on eight expert forums, which we realised with “V-Mix”, a software for live production and streaming. We used this software to show all content – whether pre-produced content, films, link-ups via the “BigBlueButton” collaboration platform or inserts. In this way, we were able to implement a fully digitalised workstation for each of the eight forums. This took on the tasks normally performed by the hardware of a video control system and thus completely replaced it.

To ensure a secure livestream that also provided smoothly running video for the large number of viewers, we did the relevant calculations before the event together with the team of experts from N&M’s “Information and Communications Technology”(ICT) unit. During the Digital Live Event, ICT also monitored the network to ensure it ran with the required reliability.
